PNA Glossary

All terms related to personal emergency signal systems and lone work – sorted alphabetically and individually linkable.

Lone Work (also: individual workstations or short EAP)

Lone working occurs when a person performs a task alone, beyond the sight and calling range of others. The duration is generally irrelevant; lone working can also occur for short periods.

DIN VDE V 0825-1

Pre-standard governing monitoring systems—wireless personal alarm systems for hazardous lone working. Part 1 covers equipment and testing requirements. The pre-standard VDE V 0825-1 is available from VDE Verlag. Here is a direct link (accessed on 26 October 2024): https://www.vde-verlag.de/normen/0800606/din-vde-v-0825-1-vde-v-0825-1-2019-09.html

Hazardous Work

Hazardous work refers to activities involving an increased or critical level of risk due to the work process, the nature of the task, the substances used, or the surrounding environment. The risks must therefore be assessed before work begins.

Emergency

An emergency is a situation that requires assistance measures to be initiated. Examples include sudden harmful events such as an accident, acute illness, unexpected exposure to hazardous substances, or an assault.

Emergency Signal

A signal that triggers a personal alarm at the personal alarm receiving center is referred to as an emergency signal.

Emergency Signal Button

The emergency button allows users of a personal alarm device to trigger an emergency signal, thereby initiating a manually activated personal alarm.

Personal Emergency Signal Systems (PNA)

Systems designed to trigger and transmit manually and automatically activated alarm signals in emergencies are known as personal alarm systems (PNA). They consist of one or more personal alarm devices (PNG) and a personal alarm receiving center (PNEZ). Personal alarm systems that also support voice communication are designated PNA-S.

Personal Emergency Signal Devices (PNG)

Personal alarm devices (PNG) are carried by people at risk. These wireless signaling devices trigger an alarm at the personal alarm receiving center in an emergency, either manually or automatically. A personal alarm device that also supports voice communication is designated PNG-S.

PNA-S

A personal alarm system with voice communication capability is designated PNA-S.

Volitional Personal Alarm

A manually activated personal alarm is a visual and audible signal generated at the personal alarm receiving center when a user deliberately activates the personal alarm device in an emergency.

Non-volitional Personal Alarm

An automatically activated personal alarm is a visual and audible signal triggered automatically by the personal alarm device at the personal alarm receiving center, indicating an emergency.
